Letter: Helping those in recovery

To the Editor:

September marks National Recovery Month, a time where people throughout the country pay tribute to individuals who have reclaimed their lives and are now living drug-free.

During this time, I would like to stress the importance communities play by helping those currently in recovery by extending opportunities for meaningful daily activities, such as jobs, schools, volunteerism or family caretaking. Community support is critical to those in recovery as they gain the independence, income and resources necessary to fully participate in society.

In honor of National Recovery Month, Renz Addiction Counseling Center is offering free substance abuse assessments during September to community residents who think they may have an alcohol or drug problem. The assessment involves completing a questionnaire and meeting with a counselor at our 2 American Way outpatient treatment center in Elgin. Call 847-742-3545 for an appointment, or visit www.renzcenter.org for more information.
