Letter: Different points of view

To the editor:

Between what happened with the “Merry Christmas” sign in Sugar Grove and the “Got Love?” sign in St. Charles, it’s easy to see that tension is high in our community. Right now there are a lot of different perspectives that seem to be in conflict with each other, and anyone who doesn’t agree with us feels like an enemy. I want to challenge our community to welcome other points of view.

Escalating bitterness and hatred and frustration isn’t going to improve anything. I want to be clear: I’m not saying that if you’re being threatened by someone you should give them a big hug. But when we’re confronted with people whose ideas we disagree with, we should ask ourselves why they think that way instead of immediately reacting with anger.

This time of year we preach love and peace, but that lesson does not only apply to the people who think and feel the way we do. Now more than ever it’s important to embrace our neighbors, regardless of their religion or race or orientation. Everyone is a human being who is worthy of respect.
