Letters to the Editor

Letter: Creating something new

To the editor:

An open letter to #TheJankGuitarStore – I would like to formally thank you for selecting me as your winner for "The Road" song challenge. I went to great lengths to produce and create my interpretation of the song "The Road" by Casely and the Jank.

As a composer, I have learned to challenge myself in order to create something new and different. If you think like all the other song writers out there, then you’re not going to make a difference and your not going to push music forward.

I emailed someone from Jank with a list of questions on what I could and couldn’t do on this project. I was basically allowed to do almost anything I wanted with this piece, which was fantastic!

The reason for my lack of appearance in the video I made is because I was the one behind the camera. I shot the majority of the video, and only during the times where I was featured in the shot, my vocalist, Miranda Keigher, took the camera. The majority of the shots consisted of time lapses and slow motion footage. I tried my best to fit everything in the video to the tempo of the song, from the changes in shots to the actions within the shots.

One of the unique parts of the video was, of course, the opening scene. All though it might be quite “meta,” it definitely enhanced the experience of introducing us to you. In the end of the video, I personally thought it was fun to add some parts of us enjoying the process of making this video. I would like to formally apologize for my error in the video. In the opening and closing credits of the video, I wrote "An Arrangement Cover of the Original song 'The Road' by Casey and the Jank.” I didn’t notice the error until after I submitted, and so I added "*Casely and the Jank” in the description of the video. I am very sorry to Casely. I know I wouldn’t be to thrilled if my name wasn’t properly written, so I am very sorry.

Overall this piece was great, and I had a lot of fun making it. The wait was definitely stressful, but I am very happy with the outcome. I can’t wait 'til the award ceremony.

Thank you very much. You can view the video at www.kcchronicle.com/video.
