Norris Recreation Center in St. Charles slated for upgrades

Enhancements to be installed during fire damage restoration

ST. CHARLES – A restoration project related to a fire in August at John B. Norris Recreation Center has provided St. Charles District 303 opportunities to enhance the facility for the future.

The enhancements will be in addition to the work underway to restore the men's and women's locker rooms damaged by the fire. By adding the upgrades during the current restoration work, the district will have to spend less than if they were installed later, district officials said.

One of the enhancements the School Board approved Jan. 8 for the locker rooms is the installation of plumbing for additional toilets for people with disabilities.

“The areas in consideration – restrooms in particular – are very restricted in terms of accessibility, and we feel it is appropriate to bring those areas up to current standards to best support the potential needs of the community over the long-term,” Seth Chapman, assistant superintendent of business services, said.

Another upgrade will be installing plastic laminate toilet partitions. Chapman said district administrators recommended installing the plastic laminate partitions rather than metal partitions because the plastic ones will have a longer useful life.

Additional enhancements include new exit doors to the pool and LED lighting in the locker rooms. The total cost of all the upgrades is $87,675.

“The administration feels the long-term savings is worth the investment,” Chapman said.

Norris Recreation Center, 1050 Dunham Road, St. Charles, is owned by District 303 and operated by the St. Charles Park District.
