Letter: An endorsement of Kramer for sheriff

Kane County Sheriff's Office now offers Crisis Intervention Training

To the editor:

We support Don Kramer in the Republican primary for Kane County Sheriff, and we encourage you to do the same. We have known Don for many years and have always been impressed by his intelligence, passion and vision. This has been on display in his role as sheriff as he has worked diligently with others in the law enforcement and judicial establishment in the county to change how people with mental health issues are treated in the legal system.

Kramer oversees a county jail where 25 percent of the population has mental health issues. He has worked with the Treatment Alternative Court to redirect some of these individuals from jail to treatment. In the past year, the county has begun Crisis Intervention Training, which provides training to officers to help de-escalate situations which reduces violence and leads to people getting proper treatment rather than incarceration. Finally, he is sponsoring a pilot program to insure that soon to be released inmates continue to receive the counseling and medications that they need to prevent another incarceration. Kramer has done all this in a county that has no countywide funding for mental health and no mental health services through the county health department.

At a time when people are talking about the issues with mental health, Kramer is leading the effort in Kane County to address these issues. We have a long way to go and it is too soon to give up on this effort. Let’s make sure this continues and vote for Kramer in the Republican primary.
