Family, friends honor 'Wizzo', promote Alzheimer's awareness

Family, friends honor 'Wizzo', promote Alzheimer's awareness

[Mary Doyle Brodien of Geneva, wife of famed magician Marshall Brodien, addresses the Geneva city council during a presentation declaring July 10, 2018 as Marshall Brodien Day. Marshall Brodien, who was Wizzo the Wizard on the Bozo Show, is currently battling Alzheimer's Disease.]
“The first nine years that he was here, he worked a lot and traveled a lot,” Mary Doyle Brodien said. “But once Alzheimer’s set in, we took a walk every day. I had to keep the man-on-the-move busy and Geneva offered us the perfect setting. ... I had him at home for 10 years. Those were pretty rough years.”
Mary Doyle Brodien said she cherishes the walks she had with her husband because he did not have to remember anything or follow a conversation, just comment on what they were seeing while they walked.
The proclamation also recognizes Mary Doyle Brodien's book, “Navigating Alzheimer’s:12 Truths about Caring for Your Loved One.”
The purpose of her book was to help caregivers such as herself cope when someone they love has Alzheimers.
“It’s a 24/7 intense, relentless disease to care for,” Mary Doyle Brodien said.

GENEVA – Marshall Brodien as Wizzo The Wacky Wizard was famous on WGN Channel 9’s “Bozo’s Circus,” a bit of nostalgia Mayor Kevin Burns said he remembered fondly.

Burns honored Brodien, a Geneva resident since 1995, with a proclamation declaring July 10 to be Marshall Brodien Day in Geneva, in honor of his 84th birthday.

The proclamation, presented to Brodien’s wife, Mary Doyle Brodien at the July 9 City Council meeting, also recognized her efforts to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s, which Marshall Brodien has had for about 15 years.
