Aldermen to consider new Geneva historic district

Special meeting set 7 p.m. July 8

GENEVA – The Geneva City Council will be considering approval of an ordinance establishing a South Geneva Historic District at a special meeting 7 p.m. July 8 at the Kane County Government Center, in the board room of Building A, 719 Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Also on the agenda is consideration of another resolution from Oct. 16, 2018, reversing a Historic Preservation Commission denial of a demolition of a single family residence and detached garage at 428 Ford St.

The creation of another historic district in Geneva was controversial, with hearings that started on March 19 and were continued to April 16 and May 21, and owners testifying against it and in favor of it.

The commission voted to recommend approval of the new district in a 6-0 vote June 18 with one absent.

The commission found that the nominated properties, plus additional properties, satisfied the stated context and period of significance identified in the nomination, and met the six standards for designation as identified by city code.

Because of objections by more than 20% of the owners of record, the measure will require seven votes or a super-majority in order to pass.

The area proposed includes properties on Batavia Avenue, Elizabeth Place, Shady Avenue, Easton Avenue, Hawthorne Lane and Peck Road.
