Cake, college and Clemens at the Batavia Public Library

Richard Henzel as Mark Twain

If you enjoy cake decorating, you can make an extra-special cake for an event, holiday, or just for fun by borrowing a cake pan from the Batavia Public Library.

Show off your decorating flair with one of the our novelty, character, and special-sized cake pans available with your Batavia Public Library card. For a preview of the pans, join us on Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. when we’ll be sampling cake. The new collection of cake pans will be available for borrowing as of Aug. 25. This new collection is thanks to a collaboration with Batavia Girl Scouts Addison LaManna and Genevieve Canal.

High school students can take a free full-length practice SAT or ACT test in September at the library, courtesy of Princeton Review. Students will get the full testing experience with an in-person proctor. After the test, they receive a score report online detailing their strengths and weaknesses. To register for a free ACT or SAT practice test, check our calendar at www.BataviaPublicLibrary.org.

To help your family with college planning, the library provides the Testing & Education Reference Center via the library’s website as a free resource with your Batavia Public Library card. Your student can prepare for the future with in-depth information on colleges and universities, graduate and professional programs, distance learning, available scholarships and awards, preparatory entrance tests, and much more. Find this resource on our website at BataviaPubliclibrary.org/research-a-topic.

The Year of Mark Twain in Batavia continues in September with a very special event—Mark Twain in Person—on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre. Richard Henzel brings Samuel L. Clemens to Batavia with a captivating mix of reminiscences, readings, and gentle humor drawn from the author's writings and biographies. Visit BataviaFineArtscentre.org for tickets and information. This is a charitable event in support of Batavia Public Library Foundation and the Batavia Depot Museum Expansion Project.

Patricia Leonard is the promotional services manager for the Batavia Public Library. The “@ Your Library” column runs the fourth Thursday of each month.
