Healthy Snacks for Active, Busy People

SPONSORED

Busy families have hectic schedules, which doesn’t always leave time for long sit-down meals.  Teenagers, especially, are usually trying to fit in sports, music lessons, and other activities in addition to a regular school day.  For active people on the go, it’s important to have an arsenal of healthy snacks to provide energy and nourishment when needed.

Turkey or beef jerky is a terrific portable snack.  It provides a lot of protein, while keeping carbs and calories low.  The Tiki Hawaiian Gourmet Jerky Company offers products available at the Blue Goose Market, with a variety of flavors and spice levels, including Sunset Pineapple Teriyaki and Hurricane Jalapeno.

Dry roasted edamame is another terrific snack for on-the-go.  Not only is it high in protein, it’s high in fiber and low in calories.  The fiber helps boost energy and keeps you feeling full.

Another quick high-protein snack is mixed nuts or trail mix.  You can make your own by combining your favorite nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios), dried fruits (cranberries, mango, dates, cherries, blueberries), seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame), granola, and even dark chocolate.  You can add pretzels, your favorite Chex cereal, and air-popped popcorn for extra crunch.  Yogurt-covered raisins or chocolate-covered coffee beans add an unexpected flavor.  Adding spices takes it to a whole new level:  try adding cinnamon, chili powder, dried ginger, or nutmeg to appropriate trail mix flavors.  Fill a customized sandwich bag for each member of your family!

Tried-and-true healthy snacks like bananas are terrific, especially when smeared with almond butter or Nutella.  Hard-boiled eggs are also high-protein, low-carb snacks, and you can find them ready-to-eat in the refrigerated section with regular eggs.  For ingredients to prepare healthy, on-the-go snacks, or for additional ideas, visit the Blue Goose Market in beautiful downtown St. Charles.
