Beautiful pieces of jewelry are an investment that, when properly cleaned and maintained, will stand the test of time. Jewelry made of precious metals, and those that contain valuable gemstones, need to be cleaned correctly to avoid damaging the finish or the stones. Here are 3 tips for cleaning your valuable jewelry:
1. Try using specific jewelry cleaning products to wipe away tarnish and keep your metals looking lustrous. Silver polish and jewelry cleaner aren’t common items you might think to have in your home, but they’ll do a great job of removing tarnish and protecting the finish on your jewelry. However, since many people only notice their jewelry may need some upkeep right before they are going to wear it, there are other effective DIY methods.
2. When it comes to cleaning precious metals such as silver and gold, the best way is to combine a few drops of dish soap with warm (not hot) water and soak the jewelry for a few minutes. For silver, use a soft cloth to wipe away the tarnish, and then rinse under cold water. Gold pieces can soak in the mixture for a while longer before removing. For small pieces like earrings, set them in a strainer before lowering them into the water so you can retrieve them more easily. You can use a soft new toothbrush to get into some harder to reach areas and remove the dirt after the soaking process.
3. If your gold pieces contain precious gems, such as diamonds or emeralds, you can use the same process of placing them into a bowl of warm water with a couple drops of dish soap to soak. You can also try seltzer water instead of regular water, as the carbonation can help dislodge dirt particles and grime wedged in between the gems and the metal.
